SOUTHEND 3 CARRICK 1

Our premier team hosted Carrick United in our first home match of the season. The lads were excellent from the start with a lot of possession and composure on the ball. Our first goal came after some great play down the right and a great ball put David McGrath through on goal who unselfishly squared it to Glen Hawe who slotted it past the oncoming Carrick goalkeeper. Southend then went two up a few minutes later from a corner. the ball was swung in from the right all the way to the back post where Billy Ryan rose highest and his strong header hit the top corner. Carrick pulled one back just before the break through a penalty kick. Carrick came out strong after the break but our defence were up to every challenge they faced and kept them at bay. Southend extended our lead mid-way through the second half after some great possession play which started on the right wing and went all the way across the Carrick 18 yard line and found its way out to the left corner of the box where Sean O Loughlin was waiting and after a great first touch he drilled it low past the keeper. An excellent win and let’s hope they can push on from this. Next game is Wednesday away to Bohs
